Human Services Loan Fund

Seedco Financial offers loans tailored to meet the needs of New York City-based not-for-profit organizations that provide services to persons with developmental disabilities. Loan sizes range from $50,000 to $500,000 and are priced affordably to help human services organizations meet their working capital, program expansion, and facilities development needs. Repayment terms are also flexible and tailored to each borrower’s specific needs. We also provide customized training and advisory services to address the unique business and operational requirements of human services organizations.

Since the launch of the New York City Human Services Loan Fund in 2006, Seedco Financial has provided $4.5 million in loans. This financing has supported a wide array of worthy projects: constructing and renovating group residences for developmentally disabled adults; creating a transitional residence for at-risk, HIV-positive teenagers; expanding an educational facility; and enlarging and restructuring several longstanding human services organizations.

Results in the community

Our loans have made a big difference for many organizations. One such group, Safe Space, a 90-year-old New York City-based not-for-profit, bolstered its mission of working with the city's most at-risk youth and families to build strong families, prevent foster care placement, and promote self-sufficiency.

Seedco Financial’s loan to Safe Space helped build a stabilization fund to manage cash flow. It also funded the acquisition and renovation of a 3,000-square-foot multifamily house to serve as a transitional residence for up to 12 homeless HIV-positive young adults. Safe Space’s SafeHome program provides shelter as well as counseling, education, and job skill training to this vulnerable population. “This couldn’t have been a more critical time for that support,” Eric Brettschneider, the organization’s former executive director, said.

About The Fund

• All approved loans are subject to a 3 percent closing fee and an application fee of up to $250.
• Available for medium to large human services not-for-profit organizations with budgets starting at $1 million, which provide foster care, youth development, workforce, senior, childcare, or other services
• Loans for real estate-related projects
  • $50,000 to $1.5 million
  • Interest rates: 6 to 10 percent (fixed or variable)
  • Use of funds: predevelopment, construction, leasehold improvements, and permanent financing

• Loans for other projects
  • $50,000 to $1.5 million
  • Interest rates: 8 to 10 percent (fixed or variable)
  • Use of funds: working capital, seasonal cash flow, equipment financing, receivables financing, program expansion, and financial and organizational restructuring. Other qualifying uses considered depending on the project.
